Jupiter’s Legacy #1

Mark Millar makes an intensely astute critique of the changing conventions of superhero comics in the new series, Jupiter’s Legacy. Frank Quitely lends an extraordinary talent to the title. The team successfully marries critical analysis and relatable narrative.

The first issue opens in the past, as we meet Sheldon Sampson, a Wall Street man with a heart of gold, and his rag-tag band of friends and relatives aboard a boat, quite literally following a dream. At the height of the Great Depression, Sampson sets sail to harness hope and bring it back to America. In a sequence of events that remain shrouded in mystery, the group becomes super-powered, and returns to the states in time to shepherd the nation through the tumultuous decades ahead.

A generation later, the heroics have been replaced by endorsements and groupies. The children of the original superheroes have a decidedly different outlook on their role in the world. Sampson’s son, Brandon, seems like a man who cannot, and should not, be bothered to care. While his daughter Chloe’s quest for approval seems to control her every thought. A far cry from the selflessness of their parents, the pair represent celebrity and entitlement.

The contrast between the eras is echoed in Quitely’s art. In flashback, the scenes have a muted color palette, verging on antique sepia tones. The characters could be Greco-Roman statues, carved from marble. In the present however, scantily clad parodies of these characters bask in bright light and bold colors. There is a balletic quality to the movement of Quitely’s figures, who are all lithe, willowy, and ever-so-subtly stylized. These characters are the most visually striking component of the book, but it is their interaction with an uncompromisingly realistic environment that will draw readers in. The way they sip a drink, or the way a couch gives under their mass, lends a feeling of believability to the work.

Millar has found a wonderful way of commenting on the heroes the public demands. Somewhere between now and the proverbial ‘then,’ we stopped wanting John Wayne, and started craving James Dean. One of the most successful aspects of this issue is the awareness that the characters have of this theme. Brandon and Chloe seem positively nostalgic at times, longing for the good old days they were not around to see. Though the examination of the comic book genre is a major component of the title, there is no shortage of action, conflict, or character development.

The entire book has a macabre sensibility, the artwork emits an element of darkness; while the text hints that something beautiful and good has been lost along the way. The absence of innocence, and the subsequent search for a suitable replacement for it come through in every aspect of this issue. The series promises to raise interesting questions, woven into an engaging story; as well as delivering a unique visual punch. Jupiter’s Legacy is a coming of age story, but instead of focusing on a single character, the team takes on an entire genre. This is the story of the superhero growing up.

Revival #9 continues to weave a tangled web worth getting caught in. With this issue we become even more entangled in the lives of the people of Rothschild, Wisconsin. The small town setting may have seemed like a minor detail in the beginning, but as the story moves forward; we realize that this was a smart decision that makes the book work. Logistically a small town is easier to quarantine than a larger one, fewer people are traveling in or out of town, and mass transit like trains or airplanes are miles away in larger cities. In towns like Rothschild, there is a feeling that everyone knows everyone. Allegiances and grievances last generations, and these sentiments are usually public knowledge. There is a strong sense of interconnectedness and unity that might be lacking in larger cities. This community feeling makes it plausible that the citizens of this small town internalize Revival Day in various ways, because of the ways in which they have interacted with those being revived in the past. Everyone has history, if not personally then through reputation or mutual acquaintances. Another important facet of small town life that is well represented in the series is this: in a small town everyone has secrets, even if they are not well kept. The phenomenon of Revival Day means that for the people of Rothschild, the skeletons in their closets can come back  to life and confront them head on.

The inspired choice of setting is only one successful feature of the most recent issue of this series. Revival #9 continues to press our noses to the cold windows of small town Wisconsin as we learn more about the myriad of mysteries that Seeley and Norton are building together. We are always shown, never told, what is happening. This voyeuristic tone makes the book stand out, because we are completely separated from the inner-workings of the characters’ minds. This keeps us guessing about what they are thinking, if they are being honest, and what they are hiding. Even with the intimate access we are granted to the lives of these characters, we can’t know anything for sure.

The creative team skillfully juggles a large cast. Seeley tends every iron in the fire, while moving the story along. He doesn’t dwell too long on any one character, which adds to the sense of mystery that drives the series. It also helps illustrate that the entire town, and the entire world are dealing with Revival Day; despite whatever personal effects the day had on individuals, it is a global problem with real consequences. Equally remarkable is the fact that Norton is able to make each character unique. He lends a sense of reality to the book by providing varied, distinct interior settings, and rendering architecture in recognizable ways. For example, the college campus has a completely different look than the police station. Both Seeley and Norton have an outstanding commitment to detail and consistency.

Seamlessly integrating interpersonal drama, political and civic strife, and novel elements of the supernatural; this book is like nothing else on the shelves. With each issue the team adds new characters and conflicts, but continue to push the established ones further and further from any direction we might have expected. Always thoughtful, surprising, and visually engaging Revival is continually impressive; this issue is the next chapter in a mystery sure to keep you guessing for a long time to come.
