Ever wonder if there could be a fresh take on zombies in a world that seems to be overrun by a theme? Alpha Girl does just that and makes the “origin” of its zombies something that came out of left field for this reader.
Judith Meyers is a teenage girl caught up in a world that is being taken over by zombies, but that world we won’t really be able to see until we get a little backstory and discover how Judith’s world got to where it is now. The backstory that Jeff Roenning gives the reader is told from Judith’s point of view, and readers learn that she has had a rough life which may seem a little cliché for a teenage girl in comics, but it doesn’t hold back the story. The backstory is told from various points of view as the players that cause the zombie outbreak are moved into their positions and the actions are made and the outbreak occurs.
Yes, I’m being vague because I think the reasons how the outbreak happens is an interesting one and should be read first hand and not spoiled by reading a review.
The art in this issue from Robert Love, Dana Shukartsi, Diego Simone, and Drew Gill is really good from cover to cover. There’s a humoristic way this story is told in the dialogue and narration and the art needs to reflect that. This art team does this in spades. There is a cartoon look to Love’s pencils that are really brought to life with Shukartsi’s inks and Simone’s colors that is very appealing and worth the price of admission to see. There are some very graphic scenes in this issue and the art style definitely expresses those scenes with just the right about of realism and exaggeration.
Alpha Girl is a new series from Image Comics, and since 2012 is the 20th Anniversary of the company every new series they publish this year reminds me, as a longtime fan of the company, just how much the company has grown and expanded giving books like Alpha Girl a chance to exist and find the audience it deserves.
